In the early years the emphasis is on the development of language and literacy skills. The girls are taught hand-writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation while being introduced to fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Oral work is greatly encouraged as well as creative activities such as the writing and performance of poems or plays.
This period represents the beginning of analysis of a variety of texts, ranging from magazine advertisements to the language of Shakespeare's plays. Pupils are encouraged to read widely and learn to appreciate the different ways in which language is used.
Pupils are prepared for examinations in both English and English Literature. They are required to study six literary texts from three genres, poetry, prose and drama, three of which are examined by coursework. There is also a speaking and listening component to the exam.
A fluent writing style and a good command of language and vocabulary are essential in the pursuit of English A Level. Particular emphasis, however, is on evaluation and students must be able to identify and analyse how writers use form, structure and language to shape meanings.
The course consists of six modules, three of which will be examined at the end of the first year of a two year course. Alternatively they could be taken on their own as an AS.
The specification covers the study and analysis of texts ranging from Chaucer to the twentieth century. Emphasis is on close reading and the development of research skills in preparation for work at university.
